Six people were dead and two missing after a boat capsized in Lake Tahoe on Saturday afternoon.
Emergency calls around 3 p.m. Saturday, June 21, reported a 27-foot Chris-Craft overturned near D.L. Bliss State Park, at the lake’s southwest corner, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
At the time, waves were reaching 8 feet.
A seasonal lifeguard and a ranger were able to get two people to shore, where they began resuscitation efforts, the El Dorado County sheriff’s office said.
It is believed that 10 people had been on board. As of 10 p.m. Saturday, six were confirmed dead, two had been taken to a hospital and two others were still missing. All the dead were adults, the sheriff’s report said.
Coast Guard and sheriff’s aircraft continued the search into the evening, and the sheriff’s dive team was to return to the area Sunday morning.
Witnesses told emergency responders that sudden north winds in mid-afternoon whipped up the waves, creating 8- to 10-foot troughs.
