BRENTWOOD – Starting next month, Walter O’Grodnick will take over as interim police chief as the city starts the recruitment process to identify a permanent leader.
After more than three decades in law enforcement, current Police Chief Tim Herbert will officially retire on Sept. 5.
“In the meantime, Captain O’Grodnick’s experience, leadership qualities, and professionalism will ensure the continued safety and well-being of Brentwood residents,” the city said in a statement.
O’Grodnick has served Brentwood since 1998, after starting his law enforcement career in Galt.
He currently oversees the Support Services Division and has held various roles within the department, including patrol officer, gang resource intelligence officer, field training officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant, Special Weapons and Tactics, and division manager.
“I look forward to working closely with our city leaders and continuing to build strong partnerships with our community,” O’Grodnick told this news organization. “Exciting times ahead with a lot of things happening in the community. I look forward to being involved in the conversations with city leaders at all levels and listening to the concerns and feedback from the community.”
Interim City Manager Darin Gale said O’Grodnick is a “proven leader” who has dedicated his career to serving and protecting the community.
“His extensive experience, steady leadership, and deep commitment to Brentwood make him the right person to guide our police department during this transition period,” said Gale.
O’Grodnick is a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute and the Contra Costa Local Government Leadership Academy. He also holds an associate degree in public safety services and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice management.
