A San Francisco man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly striking a 69-year-old protester with his Tesla during a demonstration earlier this year.
The incident unfolded during a “No Kings” protest in San Francisco, where the driver, identified as 35-year-old Derrick Lien, allegedly struck the protester with his vehicle. According to prosecutors, the man ended up on the hood of the Tesla. Instead of stopping, Lien reportedly accelerated and swerved, causing the victim to fall and suffer serious injuries — including a large gash to the head and two broken toes after the car rolled over his foot.
The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office has charged Lien with assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, and hit-and-run — all felonies. Prosecutors argue that Lien poses a threat to public safety and have asked the court to keep him in custody until his trial.
Lien has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He remains behind bars and is scheduled to appear in court again on Monday.
The protester, whose name has not been released, was participating in a peaceful demonstration when the incident occurred. The case has sparked public concern about the safety of protesters and the responsibilities of drivers during civic events.
