The Bay Area will be well represented in this weekend’s WNBA All-Star events including the 3-point contest, skills challenge and the game itself.
Walnut Creek-native Sabrina Ionescu is among the five players in the shooting contest Friday night. Caitlin Clark, the captain of one All-Star team, announced Thursday that she will miss the 3-point contest and the game itself after aggravating a groin injury this week.
Ionescu set the all-time single-round record for WNBA and NBA 3-point contests with a score of 37 points at the 2023 WNBA All-Star Game. The New York Liberty star was also named a starter on Team Clark against the Seattle Storm’s Nneka Ogwumike, a former Stanford standout and a starter on Team Collier (captained by Lynx star Napheesa Collier).
Team Clark also has two Bay Area faves as reserves: Former Stanford Cardinal Kiki Iriafen with the Washington Mystics and Golden State Valkyries forward Kayla Thornton.
